Performing Disaster Recovery with Azure Site Recovery

This week’s Tech Talk focused on Disaster Recovery with Azure Site Recovery, and was a follow up to Server Migration with Azure Site Recovery, where we focused on the planning and process of moving servers to and from the cloud using Azure Site Recovery. In this session, Miguel and Conrad focused on the recovery of servers and workloads after a disaster.

Active-Active deployment

  • High operational cost
  • Not all applications can support this

Leveraging Geo Redundant Storage (GRS) to build own Disaster Recovery

  • High Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
  • How fast can the application data/services be brought online
  • Storage Area Network (SAN) level replication
  • No application consistency
  • Separate corporate locations and/or Co-located services

Replication using third party tools

  • High operation Cost
  • Only data replication – no application management

Azure Site Recovery for Server Migrations

  • Migration Using Site Recovery
  • Almost the same as Protection
  • Protection is focused on “applications”
  • Applications can require a collection of servers
